Elizabeth Day 14

Topics that we discussed in ICT in Education today:

- Lessons will be done with Mindmeister mind map and embedded on Blogger site.
- When you upload videos to YouTube, there are setting that allow you to block faces out if you do not have that person's permission to upload. There are also settings that allow you cut parts of the video out, add a subscribe link, add background music (be mindful of copyrights), and add different effects and transitions.
- VLC Player: A video management environment that allows you to use the many video editing tools.
-Will we be ruled by robots? How long will they put up with us destroying the Earth?

Elizabeth Day 13

Topics that we discussed in ICT in Education course today:

- Internet Archive is a website that allows you to search a huge collection of information and search the location of specific books or articles that you might use for research. It is an ongoing collaboration of information that continues to get greater and greater as they add to it.

Elizabeth Day 12

As you can now see, the distance I travel to spend time with my family is extremely far from Brandon. This weekend I traveled 26 hours, there and back, so that I could spend 56 hours at home with my family. It is very hard sometimes to be so far away from them, but they are the reason I am still here. I am working as hard as I can to focus on my studies and work hard towards a better future for my family and the education of the children in my community. Even though it is very hard and lonely to be away from my home and family for so long, I am truly grateful that I have been blessed with the opportunity to be here. I appreciate every bit of knowledge and wisdom I can acquire from, not only my professors, but also from my classmates and I look forward to continuously learning and passing on my own knowledge and experiences. One day all the hard work will pay off!

Elizabeth Day 10

Topics that we discussed today in ICT in Education:

- Zotero: Research Assistant When you download Zotero, you have access to a collection of data that will assistant in just about any research assignment you may be encountered with. I am excited to use this tool throughout my own educational journey, as well as share this tool with students and colleagues.
-While searching online for ideas and resources for my lessons, I came across a website called Edpuzzle.com. I would definitely encourage teacher and students to sign up with this website because once you do, you will receive access to thousands of educationally acceptable videos that are curriculum related and wonderful tools fir teaching or learning.

Podcasting with the 4C’s

  • Creativity
    • When students work with audio and video, they are given the opportunity to bring out their personality and showcase how much they know about the subject.  Creativity can come into play by the way their show is created or by the way they deliver the content to their users.
  • Collaboration
    • When creating a podcast, students have the ability to roleplay as both the show host and content expert.  Student projects can be set up as both individual or small group projects or can be structured as full class activities where groups of students are responsible for sections of the podcast.
  • Communication
    • The entire goal of a podcast is to communicate a thought or idea.  For many, a student project might be as simple as speaking directly into an audio or video application with little to no editing or production.
  • Critical Thinking
    • When a student is asked to create a 5-paragraph essay, they are given a structured assignment When a student is given a microphone and a few guidelines for creating their content, the possibilities are limitless.

Podcasting through Bloom’s Taxonomy

Unlike the SAMR model, Bloom’s should be thought of in a linear fashion.
  • Remembering
      • Students learn how to bookmark podcasts on iTunes or create playlists using YouTube.
  • Understanding
      • Classrooms can create an account on iTunes or YouTube and use various audio and video shows as learning materials during lessons and classroom activities.
  • Applying
      • Students create audio/video projects and share them with each other so everyone learns from each other.
  • Analyzing
      • Student created audio/video projects are shared with others in the school.  At the end of the projects is a question that leads to community involvement and engagement.
  • Evaluating
      • Instead of a traditional writing assignment, students are asked to create a video demonstrating a curricular concept.
  • Creating
    • Students create a blog that involves both written, visual, or audio content.

Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning

The Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning builds on the Cognitive Load Theory, noting that working memory has two channels for information acquisition and processing: a visual/pictorial channel and an auditory/verbal processing channel (Mayer and Moreno, 2003). Although each channel has limited capacity, the use of the two channels can facilitate the integration of new information into existing cognitive structures. By using both channels, working memory’s capacity is maximized—but either channel can be overwhelmed by high cognitive load. Thus design strategies that manage the cognitive load for both channels in multimedia learning materials promise to enhance learning. In addition to the two key assumptions of dual-channel processing and limited working memory capacity, the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning also articulates the goal of any learning as “meaningful learning,” which requires cognitive processing that includes paying attention to the presented material, mentally organizing the presented material into a coherent structure, and integrating the presented material with existing knowledge (Mayer and Moreno 2003)1.

Elizabeth Day 9

Topics that were discussed in ICT in Education Today:

- Sugata Mitra: TedTalk Presentation- This is definitely something I would like to share with my colleagues... is there a way to attach a link to this blog post? I would like to attach a link to this presentation in my post.
-When a student feels threatened by learning, the component in the brain that retains information shuts down. Today's teachers need to start the learning process for students by setting the learning in motion and then stepping back and allowing the students to explore and learn at their own pace and way. They must encourage and support the learning process so that students flourish to their full potential.
- Kahn Academy is an excellent resource to use for teaching your students or even for refreshing your own memory on any subject imaginable. When you join the Kahn Academy, you will have access to an endless amount of videos on just about any subject you can imagine.
-Screen Castify is a Google extension that you can download that allows you to share you screen, but also has a blank page where students can draw or work out problems or write answers or ideas from the assignment. There are many ways that this could be a useful tool for teaching.

Elizabeth Day 8

Topics that we discussed today in ICT in Education:

- By using your gmail account to sign in to your YouTube channel, you can broadcast a live stream video using google hangouts. "A picture paints a 100 words, a YouTube videos paints 1000 words!"
- Podcasts are a useful tool that adds variety in the process of delivering content to your students. It is important to expose students to a variety of content, but also provide a variety of ways to interpret that information to them such as, audio and visual.

Elizabeth Day 7

Topics that we discussed today in ICT in Education:

- Geo Guesser is a website that allows you to play a geographic guessing game. When you start the game, you will be shown a satellite image of an mysterious area. You will be able to move the image around to try to find clues from the image that will tell you where in the world this specific area in the image is. When you decide where you think the place in the image is, you can drop a point on the world map and  submit your guess. The correct answer will appear on the map and show you exactly how far (or close) the actual place was from your guess. I really love this website and will definitely be using it in my teaching adventures! This will be an excellent tool for me to use with my students so that they can explore the world from the classroom, which is very nice when you live in a remote community.
- First Nations Seeker is a website that has many maps and resources for locating information related to First Nation groups in the world. This website includes an abundant amount of information on the different First Nations groups in the world, as well as links to each group's band website. This tool can be very useful when teaching Native Studies or even when trying to incorporate Native Studies into your other required subject areas.
- Vocaroo is a website that allows you to use it's voice recording tool. When you record and save your file, you have options when sharing or posting your podcast. this website will even create a QR code for your recording! This is definitely a tool I would like to use with my students and incorporate into my lessons.

Elizabeth Day 6

Topics that we discussed today in ICT in Education:

- "We learn best when we create artifacts of our learning, even better when we share and discuss with others"
-  Using multi-media to teach required curriculum can help deliver a more meaningful educational experience for our students.
- We went through the process of adding a "Links List" to our blog pages. A "Links List" is a tool that you can use to add links on your Blogger page. We labeled our lists as "Lesson Resources" where we can add the links to pages that will be useful for planning our lessons. I like this feature because when I am planning, I tend to forget the names of useful websites that I used before. This feature is nice because I can add all the links that I find useful, but also as I stumble across new websites that I like and would like to revisit, I can edit and add those links as well.
- We also explore the Google Drawings feature. By making an editable document, it allows all students to access the document and add drawings or ideas. This feature would be useful for collaborating ideas into one central document, and a plus, it's paperless!
- Google Earth
- We explored the process of creating a personalized Google Map. Once you have opened Google Maps, you look to the left hand side for an overflow icon that will open a menu. You will look for an icon that is labeled "Your Places" and when you click on it you should see four different options: Labeled, Saved, Visited, and Maps. Click on maps and at the very bottom of this list (should be an empty list if you have not created maps before) you should click a link called "Create Map". By clicking on the name of map, it allows you to edit the name of your map and add a description. Once you have created a map, you can drop or create "points" on your map and label them as well. This App could be used in Geography, Social Studies, or even Math! I think I would incorporate this tool in a math lesson to provide students with a visual aid for calculating distances from one place in the world to another. This tool can also provide some of my students that have not been out of the community or past Thompson. I could use this to give these students visual interpretation of how far away our community is from others but also to let them explore the maps that they create and explore and expose them to other places virtually. This could almost work like a virtual field trip or even help to plan an actual field trip!!
- Once you have created and published (public to the internet) a map, then you can click the top overflow icon on the left hand side and choose the option "embed to my site". By clicking this, you should see a box pop up with a highlighted code. Ctrl = C while the code is highlighted and this will copy your code to the clipboard until you paste it in your desired website. This will allow the people visiting the website to view your map on your blog or wherever you would like to post your map to.

Elizabeth Day 5

Topics discussed in ICT in Education today:

- I will add to this later.. My mind is not focused at the moment.

Wednesday 3 April 2019

Elizabeth Day 4

Topics discussed in ICT in Education today:

- We created a PENT group chat on Skype and learned how to add people into the conversation. This is a tool that could be used when I am teaching, given that there is the technology required to use this tool. Skype can be a useful tool when doing homework to consult classmates or teacher, but also be in the classroom if a student legitimately can not make it to class.
- You can add pages to your Blogger page. By clicking the "Pages" link on the dashboard, you can click on "create a new page" and add pages to your Blogger page. I have added a "Useful Resource Links" sidebar and have added, so far, two links. I added a link for the Manitoba Curriculum K-12 because it will be useful for not only me in my teaching adventures but to help my future blog readers who may also be teachers. I also added a link to Mindmeister in hopes that other teachers, students, or even parents may find this resource as useful as I do. At the top I have added a page in the cross-column bar (I am not finished playing around with this one).
- We explored new templates available on Mindmeister and found one that is most suitable for lesson planning. We practiced dragging notes and putting them into other existing notes.

Tuesday 2 April 2019

Elizabeth Day 3

Topics discussed today in ICT in Education:

- Using translation apps on devices for a variety of uses such as, learning to speak English as a second language or translating another language, an option instead of typing long posts or messages, etc...
- Exploring many uses for video and live streaming such as, recording the class for students that were not present.
- When you create an account with Google, you receive a YouTube channel as well because Google owns YouTube.
- Exploring different functions of YouTube and how to use this app/website, for example, how to use YouTube Live.
- Skype can be used for group conferencing, meeting when people are out of town/province, guest speakers for classrooms when speaker is out of town/province (I really want to hold on to this idea and use it when I am teaching my own class. I think this could be a very useful tool when teaching in my remote community.), job interviews..
- Set up a Skype account and discuss it's many functions and uses. ***It is important to become familiar with Skype for future reference.
- Mindmeister is a website that allows you to create mind maps and graphic organizers for free. You can create graphic organizers for personal use or for collaborating with other classmates, co-workers, or students. I think this would be an excellent tool to use in the classroom because it will help students to organize their ideas and collaborate ideas with other classmates. It also allows your quieter students to participate, offer ideas, and avoid the anxiety of speaking up in a large group. I think this is an excellent tool which I am eager to use in my teaching adventures. A plus side to this website is that I could use this for personal use when generating and organizing ideas for my own studies and lesson plans. This is a tool I definitely plan to use and teach with my students! Thanks for this one Ggatin :)

Elizabeth Day 2

What we learned on the second day in ICT in Education.

Google Chrome is both a search engine and a web browser and is most useful when working with Googles Apps. Firefox is just a web browser. DuckDuckGo is just a search engine but it allows you to search the web without being bombarded with ads and promotions. Your search will be private on DuckDuckGo.

After break: We went through all of the different functions of our Blogger pages. I really enjoy Blogger because it's very simple and I have always wanted to start a blog but was never sure how to start the process. I am so happy that I am becoming familiar with this app because I plan to use this blog after I have completed this course to document my teaching experiences and also to use it as a tool to share advice, ideas, and resources with other teachers as well as parents and students. I really like the idea of using your blog to promote companies and products to earn extra money to do something I really love to do, write! I really look forward to updating and posting to my blog!! Artifacts of my learning <3

"To be a good teacher, you should try to be the best learner that you could possibly be. You must be able to model effective learning for your students."

Elizabeth Day 1

My new blog for the ICT course. I'll put my notes here.

What was discussed in class today:

- Different ways to use ICT in Education.
- How to set up an anonymous account.
- Discussed certain ways that information can be searched on the internet and how to stay anonymous.
- Introduced to the Blogger app and created a Blogger account.

Spiders are web crawlers that search through all data and information on the web to try and find compatibility between people and products. Google will offer an account for free but sell information and search history to other companies and retailers that will try to sell and promote their products to you.
